It is advisable to listen to good quality, and well respected, recordings of the pieces in question and practice accordingly. All of the excerpts are taken from Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition (orch. Ravel), and the Star Wars Suite for Orchestra (J. Williams).
Please be aware that for some instruments you may required to play two shorter excerpts as opposed to one longer one, or one shorter excerpt that we consider to be particularly important. This is dependent on the repertoire and what is required for each piece. It would also be advised to note that for certain instruments you might need to transpose to the correct key (eg: Trumpet in C in Pictures at an Exhibition).
For those with wider instrument families, there are other options (such as Eb Clarinet for example). These excerpts are not to be played as a substitute to the main instrument, but should be prepared alongside the main instrument if you wish to do so. The excerpt from Pictures at an Exhibition for Tuba may be played on a euphonium as the original Ravel orchestration scores for French Tuba. Percussion auditionees must prepare both excerpts. Any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
Best of luck, and happy practicing!
