Orchestral Policies
Wellbeing, welfare, and orchestral policies
It is a priority for the KCLSO committee to provide a safe and supportive space for all of our members, whilst also ensuring that we push ourselves to perform to a high standard. Please take some time to read through the following policies that outline expectations for behaviour, what to do if you are worried about anyone, and how we strive to ensure that KCLSO is a safe, inclusive and welcoming space worthy of the brilliant musicians we hope to attract.

KCLSO is committed to continuous improvement in our work towards accessibility, inclusion, and outreach from underserved members of the King’s and wider musical community. Please contact Leo (Wellbeing & Accessibility), Sam (Admin/Outreach) or Jenna (President) should you have any questions.
If you have accessibility requirements you’d like to mention to us, to be aware of for rehearsals, communications, socials, concerts or the tour, please don’t hesitate to have a chat with Leo or Jenna as it’s a priority of ours to ensure everyone can participate in KCLSO activities without facing any kind of avoidable disadvantage or discomfort.
Seating and Depping
KCLSO is an audition-only orchestra. Seating in KCLSO is determined by auditions and attendance. All players are expected to provide their own deps for rehearsals that they miss.
Players in sections with fewer members, and especially sections with solo parts, are expected to be ready to dep for any solos in case of unexpected illness in other players on concert or dress rehearsal days. If you would be uncomfortable with this, please let a member of the committee know (Leo, or the Orchestral Managers) and we can ensure we have budgeted for alternative deps to be provisioned.
Before each term, we organise an introductory play-through session which offers opportunity to get a feel for the repertoire of the upcoming term without the pressure of our formal rehearsals. We also arrange sectionals where players can rehearse their parts together to feel more confident for larger rehearsals.
Rehearsals and Concerts
Concert dress is smart, all black for all members. Players are expected to wear a black shirt and trousers, or dresses/skirts that are at least knee length (when sat down). Do not forget to bring smart black shoes and socks. On tour, we are likely to perform in churches; it is essential that shoulders and ankles are covered (bring a cardigan and tights at a minimum).
Our concerts and dress rehearsals will be recorded for publicity and to support our musical development as an orchestra. This includes on our summer tour. There will also be photos taken both in rehearsals and concerts, used for our own publicity. By accepting membership of KCLSO, all players give their permission to be
recorded/photographed as part of KCLSO. If you have questions or concerns about this, please email Grace at kclsymphonyorchestra@gmail.com.
